Five hundred miles to the west of Fiji is a group of 83 islands known as Vanuatu. It was previously called New Herbrides until it gained independence from the U.K and France in 1980. The Y-shaped group of islands supports primarily an agricultural society with more than eighty percent of the population growing food on traditionally owned land for personal consumption. The main island of Efate is the primary tourist destination with Espiritu Santo offering some of the best diving.

Utila boasts that it is the cheapest diving in the world but actually there is a wide assortment of operations and pricing from bare bones to almost full-service diving. However, on most boats the dive staff does not take your tanks and some ladders are down right impossible to ascend.

The Rainbow Reef Resort is situated on the southeastern side of Vanua Levu, a short boat ride from Taveuni. Several of Taveuni's dive operators are available to pickup and deliver you right to the Rainbow Reef in the world-famous Somosomo Straits. The resort is located on a 30-acre peninsula and faces due east towards Taveuni. It extends out into the Somosomo Straits and is the closest point across the straits. Hiking trails lead to surrounding beaches past panoramic lookouts.

Fakarava, Tuamotus French Polynesia

Tuamotu is the largest of the Polynesian archipelagos consisting of 76 islands and atolls spread over nearly 8,000 square miles. Over the last 10 years, the islands have come to life with the establishment of some 250 pearl farms and tourism based around rich scuba diving sites. Fakarava now joins Rangiroa, Manihi and Tikehau as an important dive destination.

Today, Fakarava, in the Tuamotu island group, remains one of the most remote dive destinations in French Polynesia. Speaking French here is definitely a plus. With one small dive lodge and one small "pension" and no restaurants, Fakarava is for the true adventurer. With the largest pass into the lagoon to be found anywhere in French Polynesia and with currents reaching five-knots, diving is for the more experienced.
